1. Etiquette:
-You must always look into the other person’s eyes when clinking your glasses together to toast.
-Never thank medicine, because then it will not work.
-Hungarians wear their wedding ring on the ‘wrong’ hand – the right. So if you see someone with a ring on their left ring finger, don’t be fooled!
2. Driving:
-There is zero tolerance for alcohol in Hungary, so leave the pálinka alone if you plan on driving later that day, otherwise you risk points on your licence and a hefty fine.
-Winter tires are compulsory during the winter months, so be sure to purchase them in advance.
-In Hungary there is a right-hand rule which means that at an intersection with no signs, you must always give way to the car coming from your right.
3. Tipping:
-10-15 percent is appropriate for most services. Never leave money on the table in a restaurant; tell the waiter how much of a tip you want to leave as you are paying the bill.
4. Taxis:
-If possible, order cabs by phone and refrain from flagging them down on the street. You will get a much lower price this way.
5. Namedays:
-In Hungary we celebrate namedays! They are not as important as birthdays, but a box of chocolates, flowers or greetings are usually given. Buying a Hungarian calendar will ensure that you never miss a name day (and will also let you know the dates of Hungarian national holidays).
